The Blues Shut Out the Seagulls for the Second Time This Season With a 5-0 Victory
Off a gem thrown by Quincy Winkler, the Blues collected their 21st win of the season.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Blues offense continued to swing it well, with the team picking up five runs on seven hits, drawing three walks, and getting a double from Diego Murillo.
The pitching staff put on a clinic, recording their fifth shutout of the season — the last two coming in back-to-back games. The Blues staff collected 13 strikeouts on the night, with Quincy Winkler accounting for 12 of them. The Seagulls managed just three hits, with their only runner in scoring position coming in the ninth inning. Only one Seagull drew a walk in a game dominated by elite pitching.
Multiple Blues collected hits on the evening, with Cesar Chavez having another standout day against the Seagulls after picking up Player of the Game honors the day before. Chavez went 2-for-4, driving in four runs and picking up a stolen base. Chavez now holds sole possession of second place in the CCL in RBIs with 23, one RBI shy of league leader Hunter Carlson of the Sonoma Stompers, who has 24.
Winkler picked up his first win of the season, going seven scoreless innings, striking out 12 and allowing just two hits. In his sixth appearance of the season, Winkler opened with an 11-pitch first inning, striking out the first two batters on just six pitches. Asked how that first inning felt, he said he stayed aggressive.
"I was just throwing fastballs," Winkler said. "I would have liked to get that one [an immaculate inning]."
Winkler was named Player of the Game for the second time this season. Asked what the honor meant to him, he credited his team.
"It feels good," Winkler said. "Just soaking it in for the team, the team's doing well."
The Blues will face the San Diego Bombers in a two-game series starting July 2, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. — the first meeting between the two teams this season. July 3 is the Blues' fireworks game, with a 6 p.m. first pitch, a pregame concert and a postgame fireworks show.
